Nagaland govt forms five-member SIT to investigate the killing of 13 civilians

Kohima, Dec 5 (UNI) The Nagaland government on Sunday formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the state Inspector General of Police (Range) Limasunep Jamir to investigate the killing
of 13 civilians in firings involving security forces in the Mon district of the state.
State Chief Secretary J Alam in a written order said the SIT would immediately take over the case, visit the scene of the crime and collect evidence.
As per its Terms of Reference, the SIT would have to complete the investigation within one month from the date of registration.
The other members of the SIT are Deputy Inspector General of Police (Criminal Investigation Department) Roopa M, Superintendent of Police (Crime) Manoj Kumar, Superintendent of Police Kilang Walling and
Deputy Commandant of Nagaland Armed Police Relo Aye.
“In order to facilitate free and fair investigation of the case, and looking at the complexity of the entire case, which may involve an investigation at multiple jurisdictions beyond the Mon district, it has been decided to transfer the investigation of the case to the State Crime Police Station, and investigation will be taken up by the
SIT,” the order said.
The SIT, which has been authorised to co-opt any other member in the police department in the team as it deems fit, it would conduct the investigation under the overall supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Sandeep M Tamgadge.
Earlier in the day, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had announced that the SIT would be formed to look into the happenings on Saturday when the 13 civilians – all daily wage labourers – and a jawan were
killed during a botched security operation.
