Mid day meal workers send SOS to PM Modi

Imphal, Jun 26 (UNI) The All Manipur Mid-day meal workers' Union has submitted a
memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to help the mid day
workers of the entire country.
In the memorandum sent through the Deputy Commissioner today it was stated
that the whole country is affected by Corona Pandemic and the production processes
have stopped / badly affected due to lockdown.
S Mainou, President and Arambam Thoi Chanu , Gen Secretary of the Union said
there is loss of jobs and livelihood in the unorganised sector too.
The mid-day-meal workers were engaged for distribution of dry ration to the school
going children. In many states, mid-day-meal workers are put on duty in the shelter
homes and also in isolation centres. They are however neither paid for the job nor
provided any safety kits which are very essential it was stated. About 26 lakh workers
are working as mid day meal workers in the country. They are paid Rs. 1000 per month,
that too for 10 months only. A few state Governments have made provision to pay
something over and above this, but majority of the workers are paid only Rs. 1000.
The Central Government has issued an order that during the lockdown period there
should not be any wage-cut. But it is really very sad that the mid day meal workers are
not paid for the period when the schools are closed, they said.
They demanded that during the Corona Pandemic period the mid-day-meal workers
should be paid Rs. 7500 per month . All the mid-day-meal workers' family must be
provided with 10 kg food grains and all essentials per person.
The mid day meal workers working in shelter homes or isolation centres should be
paid Rs. 600 per day. Remuneration should be paid regularly for 12 rnonths in a year
it was demanded. Pending regularisation, minimum wages Rs. 24000 per month
should be paid it was demanded.
The mid-day-meal workers should be regularised and they should be paid minimum
wage and pension at the time of retirement as per the recommendation of 45th ILC.
All children including the children of the returned migrants to be given ration in
enhanced quantity. MNREGA workers should be provided lunch at the work place.
Mid-day-meal workers should also be given work under MNREGA. The workers can
prepare lunch at the site and they should be paid for this, it was stated.
