Rs 1 lakh crore rail push for Bengal: Bullet train, 102 Amrit Stations, 61 new projects announced

Kolkata, Jun 6 (UNI) In what is being seen as the most ambitious railway infrastructure package announced for West Bengal in recent years, union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday unveiled railway projects worth nearly Rs 1 lakh crore, including a proposed Delhi-Siliguri bullet train corridor, 102 Amrit Bharat stations, 538 flyovers and underpasses, 61 new railway projects and a major expansion of the Kolkata Metro network.
The announcements followed a high-level meeting at Nabanna attended by the Chief Minister, senior state government officials and a Railway Ministry delegation led by Vaishnaw, marking what both sides described as a new phase of cooperation between the Centre and the state after years of delays in project implementation.
Among the key proposals is a high-speed bullet train corridor linking Delhi and Siliguri via Varanasi and Patna. According to Vaishnaw, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time between North Bengal and the national capital to around six hours, significantly improving connectivity and economic prospects for the region.

Odisha panel clears premature release of Dara Singh, convicted in Staines murder case

Bhubaneswar, Jul 14 (UNI) The Odisha State Sentence Review Board (OSSRB) has recommended the premature release of Dara Singh, the life convict in the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons in Odisha's Keonjhar district, citing his "good behaviour" in prison.
The recommendation was made during the Board's meeting earlier this month, where it reviewed the cases of eligible life convicts for possible premature release.
