MCC violations: After Yogi, Mayawati; EC bars Maneka, Azam from campaigning

New Delhi, Apr 15 (UNI) Close on the heels of the Election Commission barring Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP chief Mayawati from poll campaigning, the poll body on Monday banned Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan from campaigning, for violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
While the SP strongman has been barred for 72 hours for his inappropriate remarks, Ms Gandhi would not be able to campaign for 48 hours, starting 1000 hrs on April 16.
“The Commission, under Article 324 of the Constitution and all other powers enabling in this behalf, bars him from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, road shows and interviews, public utterances (electronic, print, social media) in connection with the ongoing elections for 72 hours, starting from 1000 hrs on April 16,” the poll body said.
In its order, the Commission observed that the statement made by Mr Khan was not only indecent, but also derogatory and totally uncalled for.
Referring to the previous incidents, the Commission said that Mr Khan was barred for campaigning for his misconduct and provocative speech, during general election in 2014.
“The Commission observed that Mr Khan has not changed his way of campaigning and he is still indulging in using very objectionable language in the election campaign”, the Commission said and added that the poll body was convinced that the UP leader violated the MCC.
Criticism erupted after Mr Khan made an ‘indecent and derogatory‘ comment against his opponent in Rampur Lok Sabha constituency and BJP leader Jaya Prada and the poll body sought report from the UP CEO.
In another order, the Commission said that it was convinced Ms Maneka had said, “… as part of my election campaign in a new constituency, I was only giving a speech to introduce myself and the work that I have done for people in my earlier constituency Pilibhit and elsewhere, where I have earlier been elected as MP” has violated the MCC and hence, barred her from campaigning for two days.
