Bengaluru gets 2.65 million dollars EV boost with JOULE

Bengaluru, Sep 16 (UNI) The Climate Pledge, co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism, launched a major investment initiative on Monday to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Bengaluru.
The project, JOULE (Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification), aims to raise US$2.65 million by 2030 to develop a network of shared EV charging stations. These stations will support approximately 5,500 electric vehicles and contribute to the city’s shift towards clean energy.
Key supporters of JOULE include Amazon, Mahindra Logistics, Uber, HCLTech, Greenko, and Deloitte, with Indian EV platform Kazam set to construct the stations. Renewable energy provider Greenko will power the project, which is expected to deliver 22,700 megawatt-hours of energy by 2030. This will save 11.2 million litres of fuel and cut carbon emissions by 25,700 tonnes.
“Together with the Pledge signatories, we are proud to launch this joint action initiative, which will support India’s transition to electric vehicles,” said Sally Fouts, Global Leader of The Climate Pledge. “This project not only addresses some of the current challenges in India’s charging infrastructure but also sets a new standard for corporate climate collaboration.”
JOULE’s first charging station is now operational in Doddakallasandra, with five more planned by the end of the year. The initiative aims to resolve India’s current infrastructure deficit, where there is just one charging station per 135 EVs, far from the desired ratio of one station per 20 vehicles. The new stations will serve corporate fleets and be accessible to other companies, ensuring optimal usage.
“This initiative not only improves the accessibility of EV infrastructure but also shows the strength of public-private partnerships in driving India’s transition to a more sustainable future,” said Gunjan Krishna, Karnataka’s Industries Commissioner.
The project is projected to create 185 full-time jobs between 2024 and 2030. It also builds on The Climate Pledge’s previous initiatives, such as the Laneshift programme, which supports the deployment of zero-emission vehicles in major Indian cities.
“JOULE represents a crucial milestone in our shared mission to combat climate change and drive the transition to green mobility,” said Paras Shah, COO and Co-Founder of Kazam.
As India pushes towards its goal of 30% of new vehicle sales being electric by 2030, JOULE will play a pivotal role in establishing the infrastructure necessary to achieve this target.
