Through Govt's initiatives India will emerge as one of major players in electronics: Nitin Kunkolienker

By Anil Mishra
Panaji, Oct 30 (UNI) Manufacturing Association for Information Technology (MAIT) President Nitin Kunkolienker has said that through the initiatives being taken by the Centre, India will emerge as one of the major players in electronics.
In an exclusive interview to UNI, he said, India was well poised to achieve the 400 billion Dollars in electronics manufacturing target set out in the National Policy on Electronics and the most important strategy for the country was to shift its gears from import substitution to export-led manufacturing.
''We must recognize the fact that today it is economies that are competing, not companies. And thus, it is critical that the Government of India brings out production-linked incentives for all electronics. It is an opportunity for India where India with its natural advantages of geography, demographics and technical pool of manpower can easily aspire to become the global hub of electronic manufacturing. With the recent PLI scheme we see two landmark decisions – the acknowledgement by India that we have to compete as an economy and second the bold step to recognize and give special incentives to India Owned Companies. The aspiration to build Indian MNC’s,'' he said.
''The series of steps taken by the Government of India, like announcing the policies like PLI, SPECS, EMC 2.0 is a major step by India to be a global electronic manufacturing hub. With these schemes, large scale manufacturing will happen in the country translating into progressive increase in value addition to approximately 30 per cent to 40 per cent. It will result in the growth of ancillary units, engineering expertise, product engineering and progressively bring a larger part of the value chain into the country including creating major benefits to the Service Sector as well.
Electronic Manufacturing will come into India. What we have to see is which state attracts the maximum investments,'' he said.
Mr Kunkolienker, thought leader in the electronics manufacturing arena, said it was a good time for Goa to take an advantage and create a very conducive atmosphere by providing ease of doing business not only from the investment facilitation perspective, but also from the sustenance perspective.
''Goa is a hub for many of the successful electronics companies like IFB, Siemens, COMMSCOPE, Rosenberger, Synegra, Smartlink, Optel, Birla Furukawa and others. Goa has many advantages – an educated population, a compact state that is very agile, a globally known destination. The state must come out with specific Incentives to attract electronic manufacturing into the state. And industries that have already set here vouch for the increased productivity from their Goa Units compared to other states. Electronics Hardware manufacturing needs a highly efficient logistics/Supply chain Ecosystem. The Govt of Goa should try and integrate the existing infrastructure to make Goa as a major manufacturing hub. We have major port handling container cargo, airport, rail network, good road connectivity. Thanks To GOI and Govt of Goa, most of these are also under major expansion with major improvements. This will help Goa to get connected very well to the national and international markets,'' he said.
Mr Kuncalienkar, also Director at Synerga EMS Ltd, a subsidiary of Smartlink Holdings Pvt Ltd, said MAIT had been putting in tireless efforts and engaging with the Government in bringing out important schemes to benefit the electronics and ICT hardware sector, like PLI, SPECS, et al.
''We are now focusing on Export led/Design led growth rather than only chasing for Import substitution led one. This will not only make India truly Atma Nirbhar, but also make India an export hub destination. MAIT has been engaging actively with the Ministry of Information and Technology, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and other Departments of the Government to make India an electronics manufacturing leader. India is signatory to many bilateral and multilateral Trade agreements. As of now this sector was losing out on account of these FTAs etc however, with new thrust on Export led growth we will be in a position to explore existing as well as new emerging global markets well,'' he added.
