Cardboard manufacturers of HP upset over enhanced GST rates

Hamirpur (HP), Sep 29 (UNI) Entrepreneurs of Himachal Pradesh have expressed their displeasure over the proposal of the GST Council to increase the tax on the cardboard industry.

They have alleged that the increase in tax will put an additional burden on the industry.

The state President of the Corrugated Box Manufacturers Association of Himachal Pradesh, Dr Surendra Jain said that this time the GST Council has proposed to levy an 18 percent tax on the cardboard industry instead of 12 percent, which will be applicable from October 1.

This will further increase the burden of six percent on the cardboard industry. Already, the cardboard and packing industry is running at a loss due to lack of work and continuous increase in the rate of papercraft. Now with this new proposal, the packing box industry will come on the verge of closure.

Surendra Jain said that in Himachal Pradesh, cardboard was used in large quantities for packing apples, other fruits, vegetables, and flowers, etc. In such a situation, an additional burden of six percent will be read on all the gardeners and the packing will become more expensive.

People associated with the cardboard industry have written a letter to the CM and the Industries Minister, urging them to help them in withdrawing this law and the cardboard industry should be kept at 12 percent tax.
Himachal Industries Head Surendra Jain and BBN Cardboard Industries Head Hemraj Choudhary and Gagan Kapoor (Parwanoo) met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Chandigarh on Sunday and submitted HPCBMA memorandum regarding the proposed increase in GST rate on corrugated boxes. After discussing the matter with the HPCBMA team, the Union Minister has said that she will look into the matter.
