New York says ‘Namaste India’

New York says ‘Namaste India’

Assemblyman David I . Weprin is our man of the hour. Why? The New York State Assembly passed a resolution recognising India’s 68th Republic Day. Though the motion was of subliminal importance, David – the prime proposer – and Sumit Sharma – his chief of staff – were seen calling up almost all other members across the party divide for support. Watching their zeal gathering votes for their proposal was educative. David wanted it. Thanks to his perseverance, the Assembly put it to vote at 4 p.m. on January 30 and it was passed in near unanimity, barring just about four nays in the 150-storey house. Over a half were present.

Covering the proceedings from the viewing gallery, we were at a loss wondering why a 100 % non-desi assembly would go through this process.

David and his colleagues were of the view that Indians are the most docile and loyal of all migrant groups of this century. They assimilate quickly and sooner than later discard relics of their ethnicity. They study, earn and pay multiple taxes without objection. They come to the U.S. and adapt to the nation under various provisions of immigration laws. Yet they are completely comfortable and even proud of their ethnicity.
