New Delhi, Dec 13 (UNI) As the fires of unrest raged in Assam and other northeastern states, senior Indian National Congress leader Jairam Ramesh filed a petition before the Supreme Court on Friday challenging the new citizenship law framed by Parliament.
He contended that the law to benefit minorities fleeing religious persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh is illegal, null, void and unconstitutional and a violation of Articles 14, 21 and many others of the Indian Constitution.
Many other individuals and groups have filed petitions challenging the new law before the top court till 1800 hrs today.
