Netaji files: no evidence he died in plane crash

By Probal Chakraverti Kolkata, Sep 18 (UNI) Sixty-four confidential files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose that were declassified for public domain for the first time today had shown no evidence that the Indian Freedom Fighter died in a plane crash in mid 1940s in Taihoku, Taiwan. As promised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee last week,64 confidential files, which are the property of the state government, were made public that could focus on many angles about the disappearance of former British empire's " No 1 enemy," and India's foremost freedom fighter. A Union Government letter at that time addressed to Amiya Bose, the brother of Netaji, said that the Indian government had no information about the Plane crash in Taiwan. "Today is a historic day. Our government has made all Netaji files public. People have a right to know about the brave son of India," Ms Banerjee, who is scheduled to visit the Police Museum at noon, tweeted. City Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha, who supervised the displaying of "secret files" in glass cages at the Police Museum located at 113, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, formerly the residence of the renowned social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy in Central Kolkata, said it was a huge task. He said the 64 files, containing 12,744 pages have been digitised before being put on display. The first DVD of the digitised copy was presented to former Parliament Member Krishna Bose, a relative of Netaji Subhas Bose. Immediately after receiving the copy, Krishna Bose said that the Chief Minister has taken a "bold step" and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to follow it up by declassifying Netaji related files, which are with the Central Government. The 64 files which are now in the public domain would be allowed for public view from Monday onwards on first come first served basis, the Police Commissioner added. The Chief Minister had announced on September 11 that 64 files on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in possession of West Bengal government will be brought into public domain from September 18. She also announced to digitise the files dating from 1937 to 1947.“A total 64 files are with us. There may be one or two more. After reviewing all the files, we have decided to put them in public domain," Ms Banerjee had stated. UNI PC AD CH NK1332
