Nestle, NASVI launch 'Serve Safe Food' project to train 1000 street food vendors

Hyderabad, Jul 17 (UNI) Nestlé India in collaboration with National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) launched a Project ‘Serve Safe Food’ here on Wednesday to train over 1,000 street food vendors in the city on ‘food quality and safety’.

The Project ‘Serve Safe Food’ has already benefitted over 14,000 street food vendors across the country by educating vendors on health, hygiene, safe food handling, waste disposal and entrepreneurship, Nestle said in a release here.

Commenting on the launch of the project, Commissioner of Food Safety, Directorate of Institute of Preventive Medicine, Telangana, A Shanthi Kumari said, “Street food vending is a source of livelihood for a significant number of people. Therefore, it is essential for street food vendors to have adequate knowledge of food hygiene practices as it is the right of every consumer to have access to safe and hygienic food.

Nestle India Director (Corporate Affairs), Sanjay Khajuria, said we are committed to improving the food safety environment in the country by raising awareness on hygiene and food safety practices. Under this initiative, we also endeavour to enable the street food vendors by training and upgrading their skills to improve their livelihoods.

NASVI Street Food Program Head Sangeeta Singh, Our aim to empower the street food vendors in the country by training them on food quality and safety. We hope to reach out to street food vendors across the country through the expansion of this initiative in the days to come.

Nestlé India, which launched this Project in 2016, has trained street food vendors across 12 States - Goa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha and Jammu and Kashmir.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Director Dr. K. Shankar and Telangana state Deputy Food Controller T.Vijayakumar were also present on the occasion.
