NEET-PG: Govt seeks urgent hearing on EWS quota

NEET-PG: Govt seeks urgent hearing on EWS quota

New Delhi, Jan 3 (UNI) The Supreme Court said on Monday that it will see if a special bench can be set up to hear the issue of reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in NEET admission for Post-Graduate medical courses after the Union government sought an urgent hearing.
A bench headed by Justice Dr Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud said he would consult Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and decide if a special bench can be constituted for hearing the case on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central government, requested the apex court to hear the case urgently.
Mehta told the Supreme Court: "Please have it tomorrow."
To this, Justice Chandrachud asked him if a three-judge bench will be right. Mehta replied in the affirmative.
The bench asked Mehta to inform other lawyers involved in the mater since the hearing may be preponed. The case was slated for hearing on January 6.
On December 31, the Centre filed an affidavit stating it has decided to stick to the existing criteria of Rs 8 lakh annual income limit for determination of 10 per cent EWS reservation with respect to the ongoing admissions to the NEET Post-Graduate courses.
