NCAER appoints Suresh Goyal as 11th DG, signals expansion into new research frontiers

New Delhi, Dec 15 (UNI) India’s leading economic policy think tank, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), on Monday announced the appointment of Suresh Goyal as its 11th Director General, marking a significant leadership transition as the institution prepares for its next phase of growth.
Goyal will assume charge on January 5, 2026, succeeding Poonam Gupta, who led the organisation between July 2021 and April 2025.
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for NCAER as it aligns its research agenda with India’s long-term development vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
With over six decades of contribution to India’s policy ecosystem, NCAER is now set to scale up its impact by expanding research centres, deepening engagement with governments, and strengthening its endowment base.
NCAER currently works across a wide range of policy domains, including national growth and macroeconomics, human development and data innovation, agriculture, industry, trade, technology, skills, gender and macroeconomy, and impact evaluation.
It collaborates closely with more than a dozen central government ministries, multiple state governments, and several institutions, positioning it as a critical bridge between research and policymaking.
Under the mandate of its Governing Board, the organisation is now planning to establish new research centres focused on emerging and high-impact areas such as states’ growth, health economics, finance, macroeconomics, and advanced data insights.
This expansion is aimed at complementing NCAER’s existing strengths while building a larger, more sustainable endowment to support long-term research excellence.
On taking up the role, Goyal expressed his intent to steer NCAER towards new directions while building on its strong institutional legacy. .
Founded in 1956 as a public–private partnership, NCAER has long served as a neutral and credible platform for economic policy analysis in India. UNI SAS SSP
