Naturally GNDU's:Univ boasts of flora heritage

Amritsar, Jul 13 ( UNI) Nature beckons GNDU and that is why the university's Botanical Garden is a unique heritage in the region having a diverse collection of trees and shrubs.
Besides being a nursery of different plant species, the Garden provides a platform for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and research in plant and allied sciences through collection, conservation and display of flora .
To provide a captivating read for students and professionals of scientific and cultural fields, as well as plant lovers who have keen interest in floral diversity, the Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences has compiled a Handbook on “Plant Diversity of GNDU Botanical Garden".
The Botanical Garden was recently funded by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MOEF&CC) under the Assistance to Botanical Garden(ABG) scheme for “Ex- situ conservation and propagation of RET species in the Botanical Garden of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar”, the GNDU Botanical Garden is actively engaged in collection, cultivation and conservation of RET (Rare, Endangered and Threatened), medicinal, cacti and succulent plant species.

Under the Stewardship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu and financial assistance under ABG scheme, GNDU Botanical Garden has expanded significantly to include new structures like Conservatory, Shade house, Moss house for rescuing plant diversity and creating aesthetically pleasing refuges from modern life.
The handbook on “Plant Diversity of GNDU Botanical Garden” is an outcome of the fruitful and inspiring discussions with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sandhu who is a keen plant lover. The handbook provides information on plant names (Botanical and common), their families, flowering and fruiting times and global distribution of 44 species of trees and shrubs.

Virtual display on freedom struggle

Bhopal, Aug 14 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Culture, Tourism and Spirituality Minister Usha Thakur inaugurated from Indore on Friday an online exhibition based on India’s struggle for independence with specific reference to the 1920-47 period and organised by the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums.
