Nationwide outrage on incidents of violence against women, Prez calls to review provision of mercy petition for accused under POCSO

New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) Amid a rising anger in the country against heinous incidents of violence against women, the issue of women security raged across the country with even President Ram Nath Kovind expressing the need to review the provision of mercy petition for those accused under the POCSO act.

There is widespread anger across the country over the gangrape incident against a Hyderabad veterinary doctor and the incident of Unnao rape victim being burnt alive.

Meanwhile a fresh controversy was caused by the incident of encounter of four persons accused of indulging in gangrape of Hyderabad veterinary doctor.

While those like BJP leader and former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi condemning the killing of four rapists in Hyderabad in the alleged encounter, New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi justified the encounter saying when the police are given 'weapons' and the wrongdoers try to flee, the cops would have to act.

Expressing concern on the incidents of violence against women across the country, President Ram Nath Kovind said when the modesty of a daughter is attacked, it stirs the soul of the whole country.
Addressing the two-day conference on Societal Change, organised by the Women Empowerment wing of the Brahma Kumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalay at Abu Road here, Mr Kovind said those accused of rape under the POCSO Act, should not have the right to file a mercy petition.

He said there is a provision under the law, which gives right to the accused, to file a mercy petition. The same should be reviewed by Parliament, he added.

In the Lok Sabha, members expressed concern over the recent incidents of violence against women and demanded that the Government take concrete steps in this regard.

Speaking on the issue, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said that despite a huge anger against such incidents across the country, the Government was unable to check such incidents in the country.

‘’On the one hand a Ram Temple is being built in the country, one the other ‘Mother Seeta’ is being burnt,’’Chaudhary said.
