National Academy Awards for 2017-18 announced

New Delhi, Jan 13 (UNI) The Lalit Kala Akademi on Saturday announced the names of the fifteen winners of the National Academy Awards 2017-18 whose artworks were showcased at the 59th National Exhibition of Art, 2017-18 here.

Addressing a press conference, the administrator of the Lalit Kala Akademi, CS Krishna Setty announced the names of the ten winners for the age group between 30-50 years who included Rabi Narayan Gupta from Chhattisgarh for his work "Conscious and Subconscious"; Indira P Ghosh from Chhattisgarh for "Assembly of Angels"; Debasish Dutta from Gujarat for "Journey -III"; Chhering Negi from Delhi for his work "Tomorrow is a Long time"; Pradeep Prathap from Kerala for "Backyard"; Pappu Bardhan from West Bengal for his exhibit "untitled"; Vikrant V Bhise from Maharashtra for "Impression-2"; Vivek Kumar from Delhi for his work "Inner Voice"; Shiva Kumar from Karnataka for "I can't control my passion" and Jyoti Prakash Sethy from Odisha for her work "Untitled-1".

'In addition, five awards were awarded to artists for the age group of above fifty years who are Amit Chakraborty from Kolkata for his work "Space Within"; Amit Dutta from Delhi for his exhibit "Deception-III"; Atin Basak from West Bengal for "Fossil-I",; Kumaran from Kerala for "Stray Dogs"; and Pankaj Gahlot from Rajasthan for his work "Save earth by Nature", Mr Setty informed.

"To celebrate the nation's 70th independence day, the Akademi has made award selection into two

categories. Ten awards will be given in the age group between 30- 50 years and and five awards for age

group above 50 years, he revealed.

'The Akademi had received 3644 entries submitted by 1433 artists throughout the country. The selection jury unanimously selected 172 exhibits in different disciplines by 171 artists for the national

exhibition and out of these 172 exhibits 15 National Academy awardees were shortlisted,' he said.

'Their exhibits showcased at the exhibition covered artworks from broad range of mediums like paintings, sculptures, graphics, photographs, drawings, installations and multimedia,' Mr Setty said.

Describing the 59th National Exhbition of Art ,"more than just an exercise in participation and

contribution of the art practitioners from all over the country, Mr Setty said, "It is the bond between

the initiator and the spectator."

The administrator also informed that the holding the exhibition is a prestigious event whose objective is

to showcase the works of 'excellence' in arts. Therefore, the jury of the exhibition had art practitioners,

artists and critics from all over the country.
