Nagaland’s 2nd regional political party named as Democratic Progressive Party launches

Kohima, May 18 (UNI) The second regional political party of Nagaland christened as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), initiated by some dissidents of Naga Peoples Front, was launched yesterday and held its first general body meeting at Chumukedima, near Dimapur, with a few hundred people attending the meeting. According to a joint statement by DPP president Chingwang Konyak and vice president Nuzota Swuro last night informed that the meeting was chaired by Dr John Lotha, where the party’s first president, Chingwang Konyak was elected unanimously. The other office bearers of the DPP included vice president Nuzota Swuro, Dr Chumben Murry, K Sukhalu, Dr Sukhato and Menuovilie, the elected secretary general was Abu Metha, while the treasurer is Dr John Murry and general secretaries are Rusemtong Longkumer, Benjamin Lorin and Pausi Zeliang. The statement also informed that in the first meeting of the DPP has adopted resolutions, among which was to form a new political party to be named as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The meeting also resolved that DPP will strive towards strengthening the peace process and contribute towards “realisation of early, honorable and wholesome resolution of the Naga political problem.” The statement reaffirmed that “DPP will leave no stone unturned in its efforts to mobilise public opinion and support that is aimed at achieving early political solution and the realisation of genuine peace, real unity and collective brotherhood,” the statement said. The DPP also resolved to make all out efforts to strengthen the democratic principles at all levels of society and oppose corruption, violence and injustice. It was also resolved that DPP would stand for transparency, strive for respect of human rights and dignity, protect freedom of speech and expression, work for the uplift of weaker and marginalised sections of society, uphold gender equality and endeavour to protect Naga cultural heritage. The DPP further resolved to combat social evils and work towards a society that recognises merit, promote innovation, supports creativity and allows art to flourish. It also resolved that all its organs would continuously strive for emergence of people’s voice, realisation of people’s aspirations and to reflect the will of the masses. While reiterating that the DPP will be a regional party in spirit but national in outlook and would act in accordance with the global issues and concerns that include protection of the environment and responsible actions towards climate change. The meeting resolved that DPP was formed in response to the call of the masses and so would keep its doors open to all who aspire to work for the people and willing to make efforts “towards resolution of the political conflict and contribute towards bringing early and honorable political solution in the greater interest of all sections of society.” Later, the meetig also resolved to begin enrolment at the earliest and establish a fully working secretariat at the Central Headquarters of the party that will be located in Chumukedima in Dimapur, the statement said.
