Nagaland Hornbill Festival begins

Kisama (Nagaland) Dec 2 (UNI) Governor of Nagaland and Assam Prof Jagdish Mukhi on Thursday said that the essence of this beautiful State of Nagaland lies in the rich ethnic diversity, a tribal society with its distinct tradition and customs, the resilience and resolute spirit of its people that has withstood the test of time.

Inaugurating the 22nd Hornbill Festival, coinciding with the 59th Statehood Day of Nagaland began on a high note at the Naga Heritage Village at Kisama, 12 Kms west of Kohima this evening Governor of Nagaland and Assam, Prof Mukhi graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest blessed with vast natural resources and immense potential. The wealth of flora and fauna and resources offer tremendous scope for productivity and development particularly in the agriculture and horticulture sector. Though there has been a boost in tourism to some extent, Nagaland remains an unexplored haven as a biodiversity hotspot.
He appealed that every citizen plays a pivotal role as primary agents towards development and progress of a society. He urged the tribal bodies, civil societies, church leaders and all stakeholders for more concerted efforts and respond to the call of duty with renewed vigour and commitment, and utmost sense of responsibility and accountability.

Prof Mukhi extended his warmest greetings and good wishes to all citizens of the State on the occasion of the 59th Statehood Day of Nagaland. On this day, we remember the enormous sacrifices of the pioneers of the State and pay tribute to our leaders whose tireless efforts and strategic foresight paved the way for creation of the State of Nagaland safeguarding its unique identity.

Addressing the function Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio as the Chief Host said that the Hornbill Festival is one of the most celebrated events in the subcontinent and added that the festival holds great significance for the people of Nagaland. He said that it is a collaborative celebration of all Naga tribes at one venue with an intention to promote all the indigenous tribes of Nagaland, their culture and products to the rest of the world.
Rio stated that the Hornbill Festival is one of the largest indigenous festivals, where the uniqueness and diversity of the Nagas’ cultural identity is showcased in all its grandeur. He also said that the 22nd Edition of the festival will be celebrated in 6 districts of the State. Rio said that the festival should be considered not only just cultural festivity of mass get-togethers but a platform to experience the unique identity and cultural legacy while providing opportunities for the local economy to flourish.

With this the 22nd Hornbill Festival, 2021 began from Thursday, which will continue till December 10 next at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama.
