N Srinivasan's daughter Rupa Gurunath all set to become first woman President of TNCA

Chennai, Sep 25 (UNI) Ushering in an young brigade, Ms Rupa Gurunath,
daughter of former BCCI President is all set to become the first woman
President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) at its AGM tomorrow.
As the filing of nominations came to a close on Wednesday evening at 1700 hrs
today, Ms Rupa Gurunath, wife of tainted Gurunath Meiyappan, who was banned
for life for indulging in spot fixing in the cash rich IPL, was the only nominee filed
for the post of President, whose election should be announced on the floor of the
House as per the norms of TNCA.
Following are the other nominations and the group led by Mr Srinivasan, would be
declared elected unopposed as no nominations have been filed challenging them.
President : Ms Rupa Gurunath
Vice Presidents :
T J Srinivasaraj (City)
Dr P Ashok Sigamani (Districts)
Honorary Secretary : R S Ramasaamy
Honorary Joint Secretary : K AShankar
Honorary Assistant Secretary : N Venkatraman
Honorary Treasurer : J Parthasarathy.
The list of nominees was disclosed in a press release by retired IAS officer
Dr D Chandrasekaran, who is the Electoral Officer of the TNCA.
Though it was a open secret that the candidates would be declared elected
unopposed in case there was no contest, it remains to be seen whether the
TNCA could announce it on the floor of the House tomorrow in the context
of Supreme Court order, while allowing the conduct of the elections, but
restraining the TNCA from announcing the results.
The TNCA's Executive meeting on Sunday decided to hold the elections
tomorrow when the TNCA's Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be conducted,
according to sources.
Since no nominations were filed against Rupa, she was all set to be elected as
the first woman president of a BCCI affiliated unit, subject to Apex Court's approval.
The need to complete the TNCA elections before September 28 deadline as per the
Supreme Court directive forced the association to quicken the poll proceedings.
The Supreme Court had on Friday allowed the TNCA to hold elections to elect
office-bearers, but said the results will be subject to its decision.
A bench comprising Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao said the state cricket
associations can go ahead with the elections but will not declare the results.
It will be subject to the order of this court and legal remedies will be available to parties.
The Committee of Administrators had set October 22 as the date for the BCCI AGM
and elections and set September 28 as the deadline for the state units to conduct their
elections.
