Myths around Paediatric Oncology hindrance to saving young lives

Bangalore, July 15 (UNI) In an endeavour to combat the fear ofcancer and to clear the prevalent myths around this ailment, Apollo Hospitals have formed a team of specialised oncologists to helpyoung patients right from the initial stage. Utilising the latest technology, these doctors at ApolloHospitals are now successfully treating many cases of cancer in children across nine centres in India.
Unlike in the past, when most children were treated oftenunsuccessfully by untrained doctors, the current focus is on delivery of care by expert paediatric oncologists. Cancer among children is no longer an inevitable death sentenceit once used to be. Cure rates have crossed 80 per cent in the most common cancer conditions affecting children.
Speaking about the major areas for concern, Dr. Anoop. P,Paediatric Haemato-Oncologist at Apollo Hospitals Bangalore said there was a lot of apprehension and misconceptions that surroundcancer even today. Parents of children detected with cancer tend to lose hope and give up even before the treatment has begun. Quoting a recent example of such case, he said, ''A positiveattitude towards the treatment is half the battle won. Both Sravan and Latha were heartbroken parents when their 9-year-old daughterwas detected with blood cancer. With timely detection and treatment she was cured completely within two years of treatment. She is now17 and is totally healthy with no signs of cancer.''
