New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Thursday said the Modi government is keen to tap investment from NRIs in a 'bigger way'.
"We would definitely like to see the NRIs invest metaphorically and literally in India in a bigger way," the Minister said while interacting with NRIs in Australia, UK, the US, Singapore, Quatar and Malaysia through video conferencing on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
Responding to a question from an NRI from Singapore, Dr Jaishankar said: "We hope to take measures soon to facilitate investment by NRIs and PIOs".
He said that the Modi government is committed to ensuring that perpetrators of atrocities during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots are brought to justice.
He lauded the Sikh community for building India's image abroad.
Dr Jaishankar, a former senior diplomat, said among the Indian communities abroad, Sikhs have been most active in shaping the brand India an enhancing country's prestige and image.
"While some cases regarding anti-Sikh riots were closed, we have had them reopened and reinvestigated," Dr Jaishankar said referring to the flip-flop in probe in the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.
"As a government, we are committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of atrocities are brought to justice ....We have looked at compensation for people who have been affected by the riots of 1984."
He said the government is aware of the 'reason for denial' of consular services to some people.
"The government has taken the initiative to address this," the Minister stressed.
The Modi government in September 2019 had removed from its blacklist names of over 300 Sikh foreign nationals involved in anti-India activities and only two persons figure in the list now.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community to the cause of the country.
Sources said Indian Diaspora in various countries including the likes of Algeria an UAE listened to the live address by Dr Jaishankar.
