Panaji, May 31 (UNI) Stating that problem with Railways was that there was no investment in it for the past many years, Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu today said the Modi government has focused on investing in rail infrastructure and governance, as Railways was going to be the major growth engine for infrastructure.
Speaking at Lecture-cum-interactive session on “Indian Railways and its progress spearheads the growth of the country”, organised by Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry and The International Centre Goa, he said, ''During the last three years of Modi government, we have put focus on infrastructure and governance both. Railways is going to be major growth engine for infrastructure.
''We have done lot more on whatever has been done. We never invested in Railways. In 54 years, the freight loading had grown by 1344 per cent, passengers 1642 per cent and route km had grown by 23 per cent.''
He said the budget presented by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in February this year had all the elements of addressing the problem that was mentioned in the white paper which he had presented after taking charge of the ministry.
''I am happy to say that whatever was said in my budget have been either fully implemented or are in advance age of implementation. Even when I had presented second budget I had given action taken report to the parliament. It was for the first time in the history of the railways,'' he said, adding problme with railways had been that there was either no investment or investment in wrong things.
''The problem in railways was that we never invested and we did wrong things. What we did was that I prepared a five year plan in which it was decided that 852000 crore would be invested during next five years which China has been investing every year,'' he said.
