Mirwaiz under house arrest, no relief for Geelani, Malik in jail

Srinagar, Mar 22 (UNI) Chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq was on Friday put under house arrest to prevent him from leading a demonstration against the death of a principal Rizwan Asad Pandit in the custody of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police on March 19.
Meanwhile, there was no relief for chairman of hardline HC Syed Ali Shah Geelani who remained under house arrest for months, while Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik has been lodged in a Jammu jail.
State police and security forces were on Friday morning deployed outside the Nigeen residence of the Mirwaiz, who was scheduled to lead a protest rally after addressing Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid.
However, all gates of the historic worship place have been closed and large number of security forces deployed to prevent anyone from entering there since this morning.
Restrictions on the Mirwaiz were imposed this morning following Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) call to hold protest after Friday prayers in their respective areas against the custodial death of Rizwan.

The Mirwaiz was informed that he has been put under house and he cannot leave till further orders, a spokesman of the HC said. Recently, the security cover of the Mirwaiz was withdrawn by the state administration following directions by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh after Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) fidayeen attack on CRPF convoy in which 44 personnel were martyred and several others injured on February 14 at Awantipora in Pulwama.
The Mirwaiz has been summoned twice by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to appear before its Delhi headquarters on March 11 and 18. However, on both the occasions, the Mirwaiz, citing security reasons, expressed his inability to appear before the agency in Delhi and requested to be questioned in Srinagar.
After the Pulwama attack, JKLF chairman Malik was also arrested and lodged in Kotbalwal Jail, Jammu.
