Minority community up in Bangladesh to 10.7 pc in 2017: Sushma Swaraj tells RS

New Delhi, July 19 (UNI) Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj on Thursday sought to dispel in the Rajya Sabha, the perception that there was large-scale migration of minorities from Bangladesh into India by saying that the percentage of minorities in the neighbouring country had grown from 8.4 per cent in 2011 to 10.7 per cent in 2017.
Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, she said `These are the official figures of the Bangladesh government.’’
The Minister further informed the House that in one incident of attack on Hindu minority community, the Bangla government had arrested 67 people who were jailed and were still in jail.
'For Rangpur riots too the government there had arrested a man who is still in jail,’’ Ms Swaraj said.
She said that the Indian government not just raises the issue of assault and murder of minorities, but takes it to a 'logical conclusion'.
Asked about a report of United Nations Human Rights Commission on violence against minorities in Pakistan and Afghanistan, she said that India and other countries had raised the issue in periodic reviews.
Ms Swaraj sought the cooperation of the House in passage of the Citizenship Act which has been already approved by the Lok Sabha.
