Mining dependents in Goa stage protest, police resort to lathicharge

Panaji, Mar 19 (UNI) Police on Monday resorted to lathicharge on crowd of people who had blocked two bridges in the city protesting against closure of mining following a Supreme Court order last month.
A large number of people who included members of All Goa Truck Owners, Driver Association, Mining Dependents, Barge Owners, supplier of machinery, among others, had gathered near the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) Bus Stand in the city since morning. They were demanding resumption of mining operations which had come to a standstill from March 16, 2018, last following a Supreme Court order.
Though North Goa District Administration had on Sunday imposed Section 144 on either side of Mandovi Bridge and Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) Bus Stand in the city keeping in view 12 Standard Board Examination which was underway but it did not deter the protesters from blocking the bridges which led to traffic jam, causing inconvenience to office goers and school students.
