Migratory birds arrive at Hirakud reservoir in good numbers

Sambalpur, Nov 12 (UNI) Migratory birds from the far off Himalayan and Siberian regions
have made their presence in the sprawling Hirakud reservoir spread over an area of 935
square kilometres.
“In the first phase five species of the birds have arrived in good numbers and their
numbers are expected to increase towards the end of the current month as winter has
already set in globally,” DFO (wildlife) of Hirakud division Sanath Kumar said.
“We are quite careful for the safe ensconce of the birds during the entire winter and
till their final departure at the onset of summer,” Mr.Kumar said
Great crested, Common Pochard, Sail ducks and Grebes are spotted in the reservoir,
the DFO informed.
He said seven teams have been deployed at Zero point, Chourasimal, Badmal,
Mahultikra, Barkhandia, Govindpur and Parvtitong to ensure the safety of the birds
with continuous patrolling in the reservoir.
At the same time the teams are on watch on the new species of the birds since each
year both numbers and species are increasing here, the DFO said
The wildlife division in Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts are also equally careful for
the safety of the migratory birds with uninterrupted patrolling in their respective areas
as the reservoir is spread over five districts in Western Odisha.
