MIA bomb scare: Accused studied how to assemble bomb online, says Mangaluru CP

Mangaluru, Jan 23 (UNI) City Police Commissioner PS Harsha on Thursday said that the accused, who had surrendered after planting a bomb at the Mangaluru International Airport, had studied how to assemble an explosive device online.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Dr Harsha said that Aditya Rao, who is an Engineering graduate and an MBA, had worked in the financial sector for some time, but left, after realising that white collar jobs were not suited for him and turned towards blue-collar jobs.
He took up a job as security guard of a reputed college in the district. He also worked at few hotels in the city before leaving for Bengaluru.
Rao applied for a job in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), Bengaluru for a security officer's post in 2018. But his application was rejected, as there was an issue with his documents. Rao returned to his native Manipal and with a lawyer's assistance, got his paperwork ready.
However, when he found that the job had been given to another candidate, he harboured resentment against the airport officials.
In the same year, an irate and dejected Rao made bomb hoax calls to KIA and later to KSR railway station. He was arrested in this connection and sent to Chikkaballapur jail for 11 months.
After his release, Rao began working at a hotel in Mangaluru and also gathered knowledge on how to make explosive devices online. He procured most of the material for preparing the explosive through e-commerce platforms and zeroed in on MIA, to execute his plans.
He decided to quit his Mangaluru job after co-workers grew suspicious of his activities and took up a job at Karkala. Having assembled the device, Rao took a bus to Mangaluru initially, from where he took another bus to Bajpe. Later, he took an auto to reach the airport, said the top cop.
''He came to Mangaluru and joined Kudla restaurant in early December and worked there. He was buying components online being delivered to his workplace. He brought various components to this address. Once he was confident of setting up the device, he left the job and shifted his base to Karkala,'' said the CP.
According to Rao, he was working at Hotel Kings Court in Karkala. On December 19, he decided to come to Mangaluru to try the explosive device the next day.
He boarded the bus in Karkala and landed at SBI circle in Mangaluru city, from where he took public transport to the airport. He alighted the bus near a saloon in Kenjar, from there he took an auto to the airport, according to Dr Harsha.
To hide his identity, he wore a cap. After planting the explosive device near the ticket counter, the accused took an auto-rickshaw and left. He left Mangaluru and went to Sirsi and Shivamogga, to avoid apprehension, said the CP.
After his images were released by the police, Rao travelled to Bengaluru and surrendered before the police there. He has been booked under Section 5 of the Explosive Substance Act and suitable Sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Dr Harsha added.
