METRO Cash & Carry takes necessary steps to ensure safe supply of chicken is intact in city

Kolkata, Mar 22 (UNI) Amidst the recent reports and chaos around the quality of chicken sold
in the city, METRO Cash & Carry has taken necessary steps to ensure that the safe supply of chicken is intact in the city.
These initiatives will help city’s poultry traders, restaurant businesses and caterers to continue their business without any fear of losses. The store is located at Eastern Metropolitan Bypass,
Post Office- East, Jadavpur in the city, a METRO Cash & Carry spokesperson said in a statement here today.
As first step, METRO Cash & Carry has increased the stock of quality chicken across the
store to prevent shortage in the market. METRO’s supply chain assures they are well geared to augment and fulfil the gap in the supply of various portion cuts of chicken for the city and neighbouring areas. The chicken is sourced from highly advanced chicken processing centres
in the city basis METRO’s stringent quality assurance guidelines.
METRO has augmented the various portions and customised cuts as required by poultry
meat traders and HORECA customers. Due to this, customers are not confined to only buy one
type of product in poultry meat, but now have access to other varieties as well. This has been
done in part to protect long term and walk in poultry meat traders and HORECA customers
whose businesses may get affected by the current supply issue.
In a move to protect traders and restaurant owners from cartelization of chicken and to prevent
an increase of prices, METRO is offering Chicken curry cuts skinless at Rs.149/kg (against market operating price of Rs.180/kg). This service is available to the customers for a limited period –from March 22 to 25. In addition, METRO is also selling cooked tandoori chicken, rotisserie chicken at 249/ per whole chicken.
The store has also deployed a dedicated quality assurance expert to ensure all compliance on quality are in place and to educate the customers and provide them direction while purchasing chicken and other types of meat. The Kolkata store is certified with International Food Safety Standards, HACCP. This ensures all the necessary food safety control systems are maintained
within the store for the customers.
Speaking on this issue, Arvind Mediratta - MD & CEO METRO Cash & Carry India, said,
“METRO is committed to help poultry traders and restaurant owners to ensure their supply is
not hit in the city while they have access to high quality safe chicken products. Across the
country, we follow a stringent quality check for farm to fork for fruits, vegetables, meat, sea
food and other perishable items.”
“We are the first organised wholesaler in India to be HACCP certified and our Kolkata store
also had the privilege of getting recognition with a Commendation Certificate for Significant Achievement in Food Safety awarded by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2017,”
he said.
He further added, “We will continue to drive our quality journey by creating awareness for
all in the city and helping small businesses prevent losses due to this unanticipated health and safety issue with poultry meat while ensuring no end consumer’s plate goes without his choice
of chicken for dinner.”
