Men's World Boxing C'ship: Amit, Manish, Sanjeet enter quarters

Men's World Boxing C'ship: Amit, Manish, Sanjeet enter quarters

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) Asian Championships gold medallist Amit Panghal reached the quarter-finals with comprehensive victory over Turkey’s Batuhan Citfci in 52kg at the AIBA Men’s World Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Tuesday.

Amit got better of Citfci beating him 5-0. The defending Asian Champion is ready against Caarlo Palam of Philippines, whom he had defeated at the Asian Games last year.

Paalam defeated Korea’s Jo Sehyeong in a unanimous verdict in his pre-quarterfinal bout.

Panghal, a two-time gold-medallist at the prestigious Strandja Memorial in Bulgaria, had finished a quarterfinalist in the 2017 world championship.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Manish Kaushik (63kg) showed strong resolve in a very tricky pre-quater-final bout but managed to secure a unanimous 5-0 win against Baatarsukh Chinzorig of Mongolia to enter the quarters.

Rohtak pugilist Sanjeet (91kg) made it a memorable outing in his first-ever appearance at the World Championships when he outpunched the second seed Sanjar Tursunov of Uzbekistan 4-1 to advance to the last-eight.

This was his second win over the Uzbek, having earlier beaten him at the India Open in 2018.

Sanjeet will be up against seventh seeded Julio Cesa Castillo Torres of Ecuador. Torres got the better of Hungary’s Adam Hamori.
