Megastar Mammootty rewrites Indian cinema history with rare and historic trifecta of acting honors in 2025–26

Kozhikode, Jul 18 (UNI) Iconic Malayalam actor Mammootty won the Best Actor award at the 72nd National Film Awards for his stellar performance in the horror-thriller 'Bramayugam'. This milestone marks his fourth prestigious National Award for Best Actor.

Mammootty shares the Best Actor honour with Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan, who won it for 'Chandu Champion'.
This is a time of almost dreamlike achievements for Malayalam cinema's great actor Mammootty. The mega star has been showered with prestigious awards in the year 2025-26. While shining brightly with the Padma Bhushan and the State Award for Best Actor, Mammootty once again won the Best Actor award at the 72nd National Film Awards.
At 74 years age, Mammootty's continuous reinvention and experimental choices in films like 'Bramayugam' have turned the 2025–26 season into an unforgettable era of celebration for Indian cinema.
At an age when most legends comfortably rest on their laurels, Malayalam megastar Mammootty continues to rewrite the rulebook of Indian cinema.
With this triumph, he joins Amitabh Bachchan at the absolute apex of Indian cinema with the most Best Actor National Awards, cementing a legacy that transcends generations and regional boundaries.
'Bramayugam' (The Age of Madness), directed by Rahul Sadasivan, is a monochrome psychological horror film rooted in the dark folklore of Kerala. Mammootty plays Koduman Potti, a tyrannical feudal lord residing in a decaying mansion, who is later revealed to be an ancient evil entity, a Chathan.
Mammootty delivers a spine-chilling performance as the enigmatic and threatening Kodumon Potti.
Shot entirely in black-and-white, the movie offered no VFX or vibrant backdrops for the actor to hide behind. Every wrinkle, subtle sneer, and flash of malice on his face was laid bare, turning the performance into a masterclass in pure screen acting.
Mammootty demonstrated his extraordinary acting range immediately after 'Kaathal: The Core', in which he portrayed Mathew Devassy, a middle-aged man coming to terms with his sexuality. This stark contrast highlighted his versatility.
In a career lasting more than 50 years and encompassing over 400 movies, Mammootty has expanded his legacy well past Malayalam cinema, delivering performances in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English films.
In 2026, Mammootty was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award.
This national recognition complements his extensive collection of regional and industry accolades, including multiple Kerala State Film Awards, Kerala Film Critics Awards, and Filmfare Awards South.
