Kolkata, Aug 12 (UNI) Medical services across West Bengal were affected on Monday as the medicos including senior, junior, and trainees joined the striking junior doctors of the state-owned RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a mark of solidarity.
The doctors under the banner of the Joint Platform of Doctors Forum were demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the rape and murder of a 2nd-year postgraduate female trainee doctor of RG Kar medical college on Friday. They were also demanding exemplary punishment for all the guilty involved in the crime.
The medical services in all hospitals including private hospitals and nursing homes were paralysed as the medics joined in the marched in a protest rally along with the civic body from RG Kar hospitals towards north Kolkata in support of their demands.
A massive protest march of the civic body, comprising senior citizens,All India Public Hygiene Services, actors, theater personalities, and students from the Presidency University joined the march condemning the rape and killing of the working Doctor.
West Bengal Chief Minister said her government would handover the case to CBI if the Kolkata Police failed to crack the case by Sunday.
RG Kar Medical College & Hospital Principal Dr Sandip Ghosh resigned from his post, conceding the demand of the junior doctors.
Doctors Forum also demanded proceedings against the former Principal of RG Kar hospital Sandip Ghosh for alleged tampering evidence as he reportedly said it was a case of suicide, which he refuted.
The junior medics at the RG Kar hospital also demanded immediate CBI probe as well as the judicial probe into the incident.
The National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma demanded immediate hand over the case to the CBI before any evidence was tampered with to suppress the truth.
" Why Sunday, why not today , why west Bengal chief minister is waiting for next Sunday," to handover the case to CBI , NCW chairperson questioned.
" In response to the tragic incident involving the alleged sexual assault and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata, the National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance and formed an Inquiry Committee. The committee, led by Ms. Delina Khongdup, Member NCW will inquire about the circumstances, meet with all relevant parties, and recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future," Sharma posted on her social media.
A report said Delina Khongdup has arrived and headed for RG Kar Hospital for an on the spot study and talk to the striking medics.
