MCD strike-Day 7: BJP seeks LG intervention, AAP sees 'ulterior motive' behind stir

New Delhi, Feb 2 (UNI) The agitating MCD employees, whose indefinite strike has entered the seventh day today, continued to block roads and dump garbage at various places, as a mark of resentment. The ongoing crisis of civic services also worsened with staff of Rajan Babu TB Hospital joining the stir of 1.5 lakh MCD employees including sanitation workers, teachers and doctors. Intensifying their strike, around 60,000 sanitation workers staged protest at many places against the Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi Government for allegedly withholding the funds, meant for their salaries and arrears. A lot of commuters faced inconvenience in many parts of the national capital including Jahangir Puri, which witnessed a long jam owing to the blockades and heaps of garbage on the roads. Meanwhile, a delegation of BJP met Lt Governor Najeeb Jung over the issue and sought his intervention to solve the Municipal fund crisis. The delegation, constituting the three mayors of the corporations, led by Delhi BJP Chief Satish Upadhyay also handed over a memorandum to the Lt Governor. Later, talking to mediapersons, Mr Upadhyay reiterated the claim that the state government has not paid all the money that was due to the three MCDs and said it must release the pending amount to provide respite to agitating workers. ‘’ Government is welcome to fight the political leadership of MCD but it should mind the welfare of poor workers. Our workers don’t even have money to pay school fees of their children,’’ Mr Upadhyay said. The BJP leader cautioned the AAP Government of ill effects of strike, saying prevailing situation could lead to health and law and order issues in the national capital. The workers’ indefinite strike for wages enjoys support from the BJP, which is in power in the three corporations. Trying to corner the AAP government on the issue, the BJP also organised processions against it at around 50 places, accusing it denying funds to the civic bodies. Yesterday, a delegation of agitating employees also met Mr Jung, following which he wrote a letter to Delhi Government, asking it to release the amount to the three corporations to end the breakdown of civic services in city. On the other hand, the ruling AAP today alleged that MCD workers were prompted to go on strike on January 27 with ulterior motive to disrupt the city. The party said MCDs have an obligation to ensure sanitation and public health in Delhi and charged the corporations with misappropriating the money given to them. The cash-strapped civic bodies have not paid employees on time for a year now, and currently owe three months’ salaries. Though the North and East Delhi corporations are the worst-hit by the financial crisis, effects of the strike were also seen in South Delhi. The workers had earlier in the week thrown garbage at the offices of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Transport Minister Gopal Rai. UNI RG RJ 2256
