Mata Amritanandamayi receives Doctorate from  University of Mysore VC

Kollam, Mar 23 (UNI) World-renowned humanitarian and spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi received honorary Doctorate of Letters from the Vice-Chancellor of University of Mysore on Saturday.

Though the University convocation was held on March 17, the doctorate was officially presented to Amma by the University Vice Chancellor Prof. G. Hemanatha Kumar, at a function held in Amma’s Amritapuri Ashram in Kollam, Kerala.

Speaking on the occasion, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi stressed the importance of assuring academic research and science remain rooted in spiritual values such as truth, righteousness and compassionate service to the poor.

Amma said, “In today’s universities, the professional progress and promotions of the faculty’s researchers and professors are determined by how much funding they are bringing in, how many publications they are submitting, and what they are able to accomplish through their intellectual prowess."

Something else should also be taken into consideration: how much their discoveries have been able to help the lower strata of society and how much service they have been able tohelp the poor and needy. If this happens, it would be like gold becoming fragrant.”

Prof Kumar, said, "Amma, who during the past four decades has contributed so much goodness to the world—everything from spiritual education to massive charitable humanitarian efforts, showing society that these two are like two sides of the same coin."

Established in 1916, the University of Mysore is India’s sixth eldest university and its first in Karnataka. It is bestowing the prestigious honorary doctorate upon Amma for her rich contributions to the field of spiritual education and social work.

This will be the second honorary doctorate for Amma. She received an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from the State University of New York in 2010 at function in Buffalo.

The Mata Amritanandamayi Math (MAM) runs dozens of charitable humanitarian programmes in fields such as disaster relief, healthcare, education, women empowerment and environmental protection.

Since 1998, MAM has provided totally free medical care to more than 4.7 lakh people, constructed more than 47,000 homes for the homeless and provided more than Rs 4.75 crore in disaster-relief aid.

It also provides scholarships to 50,000 impoverished children and pensions to one lakh widows and physically and mentally handicapped individuals.
