Massive relief and rescue operations on in flood ravaged Kodagu

Mysuru, Aug 19 (UNI) Experts from various unis like Indian Army, Navy, NDRF and State civil defence force have taken up a massive relief and rescue operation in flood ravaged Kodagu district in Karnataka even as heavy rain continued and flood levels refused to recede on Sunday.
Thousands of people are still struck on the hilly traks, unable to come to safety as their part of the villages have been cut off from the main land.
For the past two weeks he hilly district, known for its coffee and spice plantations, been ravaged by floods, landslides, house collapse due to torrential rains and floods. All the rivers in the district, birthplace of River Cauvery are in spate.
Many villages, especially in Madikeri taluk, have been erased from the map and on ground they now look like mounds of mud and debris.
Rescue operations headed by D S Chethan began search operations along with Air Force, Navy and NDRF forces. They are searching in the Kodalur and Devasanapura villages where people are said to be struck who have claimed the hills to save their lives from the floods.
Even though the rain continued in the district and operations continued .
More then 3500 people have been housed in the 32 relief camps across the district . about 845 houses completely grounded and still count is on by the revenue officials . more then 200 government buildings damaged and more than 50 bridges damaged .
According to revenue officials who has been making the assessment since last one week and it was estimated about rs 8000 crores loss including , property, roads crops .
It was also said that nearly 10 persons lost their lives during the floods and landslides so far.
