Massive plantation drive in housing colonies coming up in all 17,000 layouts: AP Minister

Kakinada, Aug 5 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Agriculture and Cooperation Kurasala Kannababu on Thursday said that planned plantation drive would be taken up in all the housing colonies coming up in all the 17,000 layouts in the state under the Jagananna Pachathoranam programme.
Formally launching the district level plantation programme at the Zilla Parishad high school premises in Vakalapudi on the city outskirts, Kannababu said, every effort should be made to raise plants to the maximum extent by the coordinated efforts of the forests, agriculture, horticulture departments so as to take the district to the top position in the state in terms of green cover and environment.
District collector C Harikiran said that as many as 42 lakh plants have been made ready for the massive plantation programme in schools, along the roads, government offices etc. Under the national forest policy the forest cover should be 33 percent .Though the forest cover is 35 percent in the district, 25 percent was confined to agency area and only ten percent is outside. Hence there is every need to extend the forest cover along with developmental activities. In the first phase in each constituency every household will be supplied with a fruit bearing sapling for plantation, he added.
