Massive corruption resulted in early deterioration of Mahatma Gandhi Setu-Congress

Patna, Dec 18 (UNI) Alleging massive corruption in Mahatma Gandhi Setu construction over river Ganges resulting into its early deterioration, Congress MLC Premchand Mishra today demanded from the centre to take remedial measures in the interest of Bihar.

Through his letter written to the Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, copy of which was circulated in the press, the Congress leader Premchandra Mishra drew the attention of the Union Minister towards massive corruption and implementation in the existing four lane Mahatma Gandhi Setu still considered the lifeline Bihar.
Through his letter, the leader expressed his concern over the early deterioration of this bridge and said that selection of wrong contractor for construction and selection of supervisor who was blacklisted by Surat Municipal Corporation in 2014 in Surat Bridge collapse case in which 6 people had lost their lives were the major factors for the inferior construction quality of the bridge.
He said that the supervisor was also blacklist listed by Bihar Government for its poor performance in connection with a flyover project in the state capital.
Raising fingers at the design, he said that inferior quality materials including steel were procured which had less strength, durability and fatigue life.
Terming the dismantling process improper, the Congress leader said that issues in payment and delay in other factors affected the work.
The Congress leader said that the project manager, team leader and the resident engineer were removed for raising their voice against these malpractices. Describing their removal as a “shameful” act he demanded an investigation and action against the culprits.
The Congress leader said that the bridge has been and still is the life line of North Bihar and they would not let to continue malpractices in it.
He said, the union government is organising the annual conference of Indian Road Congress in Patna and added that conference, workshop symposium, seminar were meaningless if the experiences and outcomes gained through these events are not put to the practical purposes.
He said, early deterioration of Mahatma Gandhi Setu was due to the corruption, decisions taken with vested interest and preferences given to the tainted persons in the work.
He demanded from the Union Minister to immediately look into the situation and take remedial measures to the issues related to Mahatma Gandhi Setu of Bihar.
