Mary Kom, Sarita book place for Asian C'ship squad

New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) Former five-time World boxing champion and Rajya Sabha MP Mary Kom booked a place in the Indian team beating her younger opponents for the upcoming Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam slated to begin from November 2-11. Apart from their preferred weight category Mary, and Sarita fought in changed weight categories and managed to get a place in the team. Mary Kom, who had jumped a division to 51kg back in 2010 after it was included in the Asian and Olympic Games roster. This will be her sixth appearance in the Asian Championship. The Rajya Sabha MP won all six bouts during the trials despite having opponents like World Championships silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi. Another experienced boxer Sarita, who has to her credit four gold medals at five Asian Championships tried her hand in the professional circuit, winning her debut bout, but came back to the amateur fold after a few months and decided to jump a division from 60kg to 64kg.


Both Mary Kom and Sarita had missed the 2015 edition, in which India failed to secure a single gold, ending with a silver and five bronze medals instead. Other boxers who beat their opponents during the trials are Haryana's Neeraj (51kg) making his Asian debut, World Championships' silver-medallist Sonia Lather (57kg) along with last Asian Championships' silver-medallist Saweety Boora (81g). Pooja Rani (75kg) and Seema Punia (+81kg), both bronze medal winners in 2015, Pooja is also an Asian Games bronze medallist. India's Asian Championship squad: MC Mary Kom (48kg), Neeraj (51kg), Shiksha (54kg), Sonia Lather (57kg), Pavitra (60kg), L Sarita Devi (64kg), Lovelina (69kg), Pooja Rani (75kg), Saweety Boora (81kg) and Seema Punia (+81kg).
