Mark Boucher appointed head coach of South Africa men's team

Cape Town, Dec 14 (UNI) Former wicket-keeper Mark Boucher was named head coach
of the South Africa men’s national team on Saturday.
Boucher was unveiled in his new role by his former teammate Graeme Smith, Cricket
South Africa’s current acting director of cricket. Smith took up the job earlier this week,
for a three-month tenure. Enoch Nkwe, who was interim team director for their tour of
India, will now become assistant coach.
“I have brought Boucher on board because I feel he will bring the toughness to turn
a young and inexperienced Proteas squad into a battle-ready outfit," Smith said at a
media briefing at Newlands. "With his experience of a long career as an international
cricketer he has first hand experience of what it takes to succeed in the Test arena."
“I have the highest regard for Enoch as well and I want to create a clear path for him
to grow into a top international coach. At the same time there is a clear need to maintain
continuity and stability in the Proteas management team and we will be retaining the
technical support staff along with Volvo Masubelele continuing as team manager and
Justin Ontong as fielding coach," he said.
Faf du Plessis was also confirmed as Test captain, whereas Ashwell Prince is expected
to take charge of the 'A' side, beginning with the tour game against the visiting England
side. Linda Zondi is set to continue as convener of the National Selection Panel.
Smith also said that he would soon be appointing batting and bowling consultants for
the side as well, an ICC report said.
Boucher, 43, is the current head coach of Titans in South Africa, a position he has held
since August 2016. He is also heading the support staff at Tshwane Spartans, the
Centurion-based franchise in the Mzansi Super League. In a 15-year playing career,
Boucher featured in 147 Tests, 295 ODIs and 25 T20Is, claiming a record 999 dismissals
as a wicket-keeper.
Boucher’s first assignment as coach will be England’s tour to South Africa, consisting
of four Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is, beginning with the Boxing Day Test.
