Mansa municipal poll nomination scrutiny sparks protests, tension

Chandigarh, May 18 (UNI) Tension prevailed outside the SDM office in Punjab’s Mansa district on Monday after protests erupted during the scrutiny of nomination papers for the municipal council elections, forcing police personnel to escort Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Dr Vijay Singla through a crowd of demonstrators to his vehicle.
The protest began after independent candidate Arpit Chaudhary, contesting from Ward No. 18, alleged that attempts were being made to get his nomination papers cancelled. Following the allegations, candidates and supporters associated with the BJP, Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal gathered outside the SDM office and raised slogans against the MLA.
Eyewitnesses said the situation turned chaotic as heated arguments broke out between protesters and the MLA’s supporters. During the commotion, a scuffle reportedly took place involving Dr Vijay Singla and his personal assistant with some demonstrators. Police personnel later intervened, brought the situation under control, and safely escorted the MLA from the spot.
