Maneka for dropping name of father from passport of single parent
New Delhi, Jul 17 (UNI) Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has again jumped into the fray - this time she has come to the rescue of a woman who has questioned the need of putting the father's name on passports. Convinced by the situation that Priyanka Gupta, a single mother from Delhi, finds herself in, Ms Gandhi has asked her ministerial colleague Sushma Swaraj to change passport requirements making the father's name mandatory on their passports. Driven to despair, the single mother started an online petition for changing passport requirements naming the father of the child, saying that he had abandoned them. Despite judicial pronouncements that the father's name was not required in the passport, Priyanka complained that the passport office had not budged from its position. Ms Gandhi in her letter to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj requested that children of single mothers be allowed to exclude their father's name from their passports. ''Have received petitions where #mother/#child have insisted that name of the father should not be mentioned in #passport,'' she tweeted, tagging Ms Swaraj. The petitions involved cases in which the father had abandoned the mother and the court had granted custody of the child to the mother, she noted. MORE UNI SD SV ADG 1130
