Mandate 2019: Ambedkar's VBA eroded Cong base in Maharashtra

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, May 24 (UNI) The 17th Lok Sabha elections that finally culminated with the May 23 vote count reflected an unalloyed triumph for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance as the Opposition faced a bitter debacle, corroborating the exit polls.

BJP-Shiv Sena alliance cornered 41 out of 48 LS seats in the state while the Nationalist Congress Party was reduced to four- Baramati, Raigad, Satara and Shirur.

Indian National Congress secured Chandrapur LS seat and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen's Imtiaz Jaleel won in Aurangabad. Independent woman candidate Navnit Kaur Rana clinched victory at Amravati.

The Congress-NCP's rout was attributed to the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Agadhi which fielded its candidates on several seats across Maharashtra and garnered 7.2 per cent votes.

VBA's move resulted in scattering of votes owing to which at least eight Congress-NCP nominees lost.

The prominent Opposition candidates, from whom the voters shied away, were Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashok Chavan and the former Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

Congress' Ashok Chavan lost Nanded to BJP's Prataprao Chikkalikar by a margin of more than 40,000 votes and the VBA candidate Yashpal Bhinge garnered 1.65 lakh votes.

A close contest emerged in Solapur which was contested by political heavyweights Sushilkumar Shinde,BJP's Dr Jaysidhesvar Swami and the VBA chief Prakash Ambedkar.

BJP's Dr Swami wooed the voters in Solapur and won by a margin of 1.58 lakh votes while Prakash Ambedkar managed to get 1.70 lakh votes.

VBA nominees in Akola, Buldhana, Gadchiroli, Hatkanangale, Parbhani,and Sangli resulted in the scattering of votes and in turn eroded the Congress-NCP's winning prospects.

Chandrapur was the lone LS seat won by the Congress' Balu Dhanorkar, who defeated BJP's Hansraj Ahir by a margin of 45,000 votes. VBA's Rajendra Mahadole got 1.10 lakh votes.

In Amravati, Ms Navnit Rana won by a margin of 36,000 votes defeating Shiv Sena's Anandrao Adsul and VBA's Gunwant Deopare.
