Mandarin fruit exported to Dubai, Hong Kong from Guwahati Airport

Guwahati, Dec 31 (UNI) The year ended on a positive note for Assam and North Eastern region’s farmers as consignments of mandarin were sent off to Dubai and Hong Kong from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati, in an initiative by Industries and Commerce department, Government of Assam, Airport Authority of India (AAI), Assam Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (AIIDC) and Spice Jet.
The consignments were flagged off by Assam Industries and Commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, in the presence of several dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Patowary termed the beginning of export of organic products from Assam as well as North Eastern region through the Guwahati Airport as an immensely beneficial initiative for farmers of the region.
He said, “Our farmers have now got the direct linkage to export their products. Not just the farmers of Assam, but of the entire North Eastern region will benefit from this beginning.”
He urged the farmers to concentrate on growing organic products as it was the USP of the North Eastern region.
The minister further pointed that the elimination of middlemen in the process of export will ensure that the full benefits percolate to the farmers or growers directly.
He said, “It is the dream of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi that farmers’ income must increase and they should get the maximum benefit out of their produce. With the opening of this export facility at Guwahati Airport, the farmers and growers can now directly send their goods abroad, without having to depend on any middlemen or agency.”
Patowary also lauded the role of various departments and agencies, including officials of his Industries and Commerce department, AAI, AAI-ACLAS (Air Cargo Logistic and Allied Services), AIIDC, Spice Jet and SpiceFesh, among others.
He called on other cargo operators to start their services from Guwahati Airport, adding that all infrastructure is available at Guwahati Airport for smooth export of goods.
The consignment exported today is of mandarin to Hong Kong and Dubai by SpiceFresh, in association with AIIDC by way of value-addition in one of the marketing infrastructure of the Corporation at Margherita in eastern Assam.
Export from the Guwahati Airport had commenced on November 3 this year when Flat Beans, Radish and Brinjal (egg plant) were sent to London and Doha.
It was followed by export of Papaya (Red Lady variety) to Dubai on December 12 and again on December 22, and Oranges and Seed Less Assam Lemon on December 26, also to Dubai.
