Man waiting in queue for subsidized onions dies in Vijaywada

Vijayawada, Dec 9 (UNI) A man, who stood in a long queue at rythu bazar to buy subsidized onions, suffered massive cardiac arrest and died in Gudiwada in Krishna district on Monday.
The deceased Sambaiah (65) stood for a couple of hours in the long queue to get subsidized onions, being supplied by the government at Rs 25 per KG. He suddenly collapsed in the queue. While he was being shifted to hospital he died.
Those who stood in queue told media that onions were not sold yesterday. The official resumed the selling of subsidized onions today and hundreds of people throng to the rythu bazar to buy a KG of onion at Rs.25 as the same is being sold at Rs.150 in the open market.
Meanwhile, long queues were formed in the early hours itself in the rythu bazars in Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Nandigama and other places to by subsidized onions. A stampede like situation prevailed sometime in rythu bazar in Visakhapatnam.
Meanwhile, an official release here said that Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy closely monitoring the situation and instructing the officials to take steps to ensure the availability of stocks at subsidized rates at Rythu Bazaar outlets.
The Government has so far purchased 35,000 quintiles of onion worth Rs.25 crores and has been consistently maintaining the price at Rs 25 per kg. The state has procured onions from Sholapur, Alwar, Kurnool and Tadepalligudem at prices varying from Rs.40 to Rs.120 and selling at Rs.25 ever since the scarcity of onions broke out.
