Kolkata, May 18 (UNI) Nephew of All India Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and Sitting MP Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday sent a defamation notice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for his alleged derogatory remarks made against him, in a public rally on Wednesday at Diamond Harbour in South 24 parganas district of West Bengal.
Mr Modi has been given 36 hours to apologise or face legal proceedings, according to the notice served by Banerjee's lawyer and sent to the PM's official residence and the BJP state headquarters.
According to the notice, Mr Modi's speech also seemed to suggest that the sitting parliamentarian from Diamond Harbour was "in the habit of encroaching upon public land" and that he was part of a "syndicate involved in organised extortion".
The notice, written by Abhishek Banerjee's advocate on his behalf, claimed that the speech - which was widely aired on media channels - was aimed at harming his reputation.
Describing the Prime Minister’s remarks as “unverified, sensationalist, and patently inaccurate” the letter alleged.
“You made certain wildly fabricated allegations against my client with the sole intent to mislead the people you were addressing in order to besmirch my client’s well-earned reputation,” the notice said.
In a scathing attack on Abhishek Banerjee, Prime Minister said he will lose the elections this time and once the results are announced, his office would be locked.
“After the election results, the bhatija’s office will be under lock and key. I have been told that the office of the Bhatija has been built by encroaching roads in keeping with the great tradition of the TMC. Hasn’t he done it this way? Illegally?” Mr Modi said.
Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Youth Congress president, is seeking re-election from Diamond Harbour in the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections. He is pitted against the BJP's Nilanjan Roy, in whose support Mr Modi had come to campaign that day.
