Maliwal calls for candle light march from Raj Ghat to India Gate, protestors stopped at BSZ Marg

New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) Hundreds of people took to the streets joining the candle march in support of the Delhi Commision for Women's chief Swati Maliwal's movement against rapes demanding a strong justice delivery system in rape cases and ensuring women safety were stopped by the police as they entered Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg about a kilometer's distance after they began from the Raj Ghat.
Women, students and a large number of people coming from various walks of life came together in support of Maliwal's casue who's indefinite hunger strike entered the fifth consecutive day on Saturday.
The protestors who wanted to march towards the India Gate peacefully were stopped at the BSZ Marg as the police had put barricades and later stationed their water cannons behind the same.
The police used water cannons to stop the protestors who tried crossing the barricading and later on they sat next to the barricades and lit up their candles on the same.
Meanwhile taking to micro blogging site twitter, Maliwal said that when the government gets scared of such a movement it brings the police in front and has stopped the candle march that the women and people were conducting to demand justice for the Unnao rape survivor who passed away.
She further said that they used water cannons to stop the march from going towards India Gate and added alleging that the government cannot hang the rapists, but, cannot stay back from inflicting atrocities on women in this manner.
A DCW supporter said that initially the intimation was given to the police regarding the candle march from Raj Ghat to India Gate and there were no such objections to the same , however, when the march began it was stopped at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg stating some important movement because of which the road had to be closed.
The protestors after requesting the police slowly began to disperse from the place they were stopped at the BSZ marg and their candle march lasted for about three hours beginning at around 1700 hours from Raj Ghat.
