Maize farmers worried about Fall Armyworm pest

Hamirpur (HP), July 25(UNI) The department of agriculture has warned the farmers of the district about the of ''Fall Armyworm'' pest that attacks the Maize crops badly.
The pest is said to have traveled from the US to India along with the hybrid seeds, insiders in the department said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the farmers have alleged that these insects have started cutting down their crops in areas adjacent to the Una district.
They said that the pest cut down small corn plants from the roots and drop them in the fields. Not only this, due to this pest as soon as the maize plant starts growing in the field, there are a lot of complaints about the pores in the stem and leaves of the plant and destruction of the plant due to a blotting on the leaves.
Maize is the main crop of the district and buyers from other parts of the country visit Hamirpur villages to purchase the Maize corns from here to make various sorts of products like Corn flakes and glucose for which Hamirpur based Maize is the most suited.
Jeet Singh Thakur, the Deputy Director of Agriculture said that in order to contain the newly seen pest, the department had intensified its activities and had started giving advice to the farmers how to contain it.
He has told the farmers to spray azadirachtin or chlorophyrus twenty percent by mixing it with the water and then to spray it on the crops to save them.
He has also appealed to the farmers to inform the department through its filed agencies if such pests were reported in their respective areas.
