Maintain supremacy of legislature, Jaitley appeals to Elders
New Delhi, May 13 (UNI) With the Supreme Court judgment on the Uttarakhand issue still fresh in his mind, Leader of the House Arun Jaitley today made a fervent appeal in the Rajya Sabha to maintain supremacy of the Parliament in law and budget making, failing which, he said, the democracy will be in peril. Bidding farewell to the retiring Members of the House, Mr Jaitley said, "If we cede the power of law and budget making, it would weaken the parliamentary democracy itselt." This is for the second time that Mr Jaitley has flagged the issue of supremacy of the legislature. During his reply on the finance bill a day before, he had lamented that the edifice of legislature was being destroyed by judiciary step by step and brick-by-brick. Incidentally, the apex court had cleared the decks for Harish Rawat to return as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on the same day. “Step by step, brick by brick, the edifice of India’s legislature is being destroyed,” he said. "The manner in which encroachment of legislative and executive authority by India’s judiciary is taking place, probably financial power and budget making is the last power that you have left," he said. Referring to the ongoing conflict between the Lower and the Upper House, he said the solution to all the issues will come only through debate. UNI MK SB/AE 1607
