Mahant Narendra Giri found dead at Baghambari Muth

Prayagraj, Sep 20 (UNI) Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Narendra Giri was found dead at Baghambari Mutt here on Monday, police said.
The body of Giri, who headed one of the largest religious bodies of saints in the country, was found in his room in the Mutt, hanging from the ceiling of his room which was locked from inside, police said.
According to the police, it prima facie appeared to be a case of suicide, and the probe is on. Police also said Narendra Giri's disciple Anand Giri was named in the note.
Anand Giri had claimed innocence alleging a conspiracy in the death of the Mahant. He has been detained from Haridwar in connection with the suicide case, the police said.
A purported suicide note was recovered from the Mahant's room, and a forensic probe of the letter would be done to establish if it was written by him, senior police official KP Singh said.
Claiming innocence, Anand Giri said: "Those who succeeded in separating us are behind his death".
Asked to reveal the names that could be responsible for the Mahant's death, he said he was scared for his life, and refused to divulge any details.
There were reports of differences between him and Anand Giri.
"It is a conspiracy, those who have planned it wanted to get his property. Many people are involved in it," said Anand Giri.
"Guruji was not under mental pressure; he was tortured by conspirators. I demand for an unbiased probe into the matter. I should be punished if I am found guilty," he added.
His death was condoled by top political leaders.
In a tweet in Hindi, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, 'The death of Shri Narendra Giri ji, President of Akhara Parishad, is extremely sad.
While being devoted to spiritual traditions, he played a big role in connecting many streams of Sant Samaj together.'
In a tweet in Hindi, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, 'The president of Akhara Parishad Shri Narendra Giri ji's entire life was devoted to the promotion, upliftment and human service of spirituality and religion.'
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also condoled his death, and said, 'The death of Mahant Narendra Giri ji, President of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, is an irreparable loss to the spiritual world.'
Yesterday, UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya had gone to the Mutt and took blessings from the Mahant. Recently, DGP Mukul Goyal had also gone to the Mutt.
" I met him yesterday and took his blessings. He was very happy but today I got to know that he died by suicide which has shocked me and made me sad. We'll take all the necessary steps to find out the exact cause of his death," UP Deputy CM said.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged conspiracy in his death.
While condoling his death, Surjewala said: "Was it suicide or a planned murder. What kind of government is there in UP which can't even keep the saints safe."
Mahant Raju Das, of the famous Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya, too expressed his grief and said that its a great loss to the saint fraternity.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav expressed his grief over the demise. "It is an irreparable loss! May God grant the virtuous soul a place at his feet and strength to his followers to bear this sorrow. Heartfelt tribute," he said.
