Maghe Sankranti sans major public fairs

Gangtok, Jan 14 (UNI) Maghe Sankranti festivities dimmed by Corona Pandemic scare were reduced to simply religious rituals performed at home. It is the annually celebrated festival, based on the Sun moving North and entering Capricorn (Makar). It reminds us of astronomical knowledge of our ancestors who celebrated the change of season heralding Spring, after Winter projecting longer and warmer days.
Those following Hindu religion in Sikkim, had a holy dip at the confluence of River Teesta and Rangeet, holy rivers flowing across the State. This was followed by offerings to deities. Subsequently, as usual, tika of edible roots was applied by elders to youngers, in the family, as a mark of blessing. Now at the end of Hindu Posh ( Poos) month which is considered as a Black month when nothing new could be started, no marriages, buying houses or any property ,preparations for marriages and engagements have started.
Sesame Jaggery sweets, Tapioca, Yam ,Sweet Potatoes and savouries prepared from Buckwheat flour are eaten and exchanged. It is believed that post harvest when hardly any standing crop is left, the roots are dug and eaten ,fresh sowing takes place. Roots are boiled on the last day of bad month (13th January) and consumed on the next day. However, the Tribal Limboos of Sikkim say the Roots are eaten as our prehistoric Stone age ancestors also used to eat then.
