Lucknow to host hockey nationals in March next year

Lucknow to host hockey nationals in March next year

Lucknow, Dec 8 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh will be hosting the eighth Hockey India Senior National ‘A’ Division Championship from March 15 to 26, 2018.

The state had hosted the sixth championship in Etawah in 2016, while the seventh was held in Bhopal this year.

Hockey India, Uttar Pradesh, secretary and Olympian Dr R P Singh said here on Friday that preparations for the event have begun.

He said all the matches would be played at the Mohammad Shahid AstroTurf stadium in Gomti Nagar. “Though all the matches would be played during the day, if required matches could also be played in the evening as the stadium is equipped with floodlights,” he said.

In Lucknow, there are three AstroTurf grounds -- Sports College, Gomti Nagar stadium and Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Around 20 teams from across the country would be participating in the elite hockey tourney with reigning champions Railways defending their title with the help of several international players.

Among the teams expected are Punjab, Odisha, Indian University (team members drawn from various universities in India), Mumbai, Karnataka, AG Office, Services, Punjab and Sind Bank, Namdhari XI and Madhya Pradesh.

In 2016, both the A and B divisions senior hockey championship were held in Etawah, but this time the B Division championship would be held in Manipur.

Dr Singh said UP team’s selection process is on and the team’s training camp is expected to be held early next year.
